The Big Picture

Evolution is a relatively simple algorithmic process that creates exceptionally complex, fine-tuned systems. What properties are important to evolution when creating systems? The cyanobacterial circadian clock is an excellent example of this. The clock is a long preserved and fine-tuned feature in these ancient organisms, but why is it important? I’m taking advantage of high throughput mutational screening techniques to explore how all point mutants in the core clock genes effect the phenotype and fitness of the organism. This will allow us to finally answer fundamental questions about what clock phenotypes are important to having a fit organism!
