Mentoring

The Graduate Program in Biophysical Sciences is fundamentally different from most graduate programs in the sciences.

In order to truly bridge the expertise and approach of two scientific fields it is necessary to fully participate in both. The professors of The University of Chicago each maintain a vibrant and dedicated research group whose members share in the daily successes and frustrations of their related questions. It is this shared intellectual exertion that moves a subject forward, and it is this environment that most efficiently teaches the deepest understanding.

The Graduate Program in Biophysical Sciences takes advantage of a dual mentorship program that has been highly successful as part of our  Burroughs Welcome Fund Interfaces in Science program. Each graduate student chooses a pair of mentors from across our diverse faculty and fully participates in both of these research groups. In our experience, this is an unparalleled learning experience and will lead to the development of unimagined science.
