The Program

The Graduate Program in Biophysical Sciences is fundamentally different from most graduate programs in the sciences.

Research

Thesis research is conducted under the supervision of two mentors who bring different intellectual and physical tools to bear. Students are expected to contribute to the science in both groups as they explore the interface between them.

Communication

Collaboration and cross-disciplinary communication are required elements of the training. Students write and give talks frequently.

Immersion

The first year of our program is an intense foray into the current state of biophysical knowledge and methods, including an immersive practical laboratory course.  At the same time, our students take an array of rigorous graduate courses, taught by faculty from across our scientific community, alongside students in traditional disciplines.

Community

Students are part of a close-knit group of brilliant scientists, but each student carves out a new combination of ideas and methods. Students have the chance to create emerging fields of science.
